I wonder how long it takes get used to something. The new shirt you buy. The new macbook. The brand new LCD flatscreen sitting in the living room. When does that thing that you loved become common? And is this the same in all of life or just our possessions. What about the person who has horrendous vision, then they have lasic surgery and all vision is restored? When do their new eyes become normal?
I wonder because in Matthew 9:27, two blind men followed Jesus to his house one day. When they got there, they asked Jesus “to have mercy on us.” Then they went on into his house, and Jesus asked, “Do you believe I can make you see?”
“Yes, Lord,” they told him, “we do.”
Then he touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith, it will happen.” Then their eyes were opened, and they could see! Jesus sternly warned them, “Don’t tell anyone about this.”
I love the next verse, Matthew 9:31.
But instead, they went out and spread his fame all over the region.
Because their eyes weren’t normal to them. This wasn’t normal. It wasn’t common. This was a complete change. I’m sure at some point they became used to seeing, but I hope they never ran out of gratitude.
That is my story. I hope that even though I may get used to the healing Jesus gave to my soul, I will never lose my gratitude. That thankfulness is always before me. When gratitude fills your heart,
you go out and spread his fame all over the region.
